The 411 on the Boob Job (Breast Augmentation) Procedure

The breast augmentation procedure is a surgical one to enhance or enlarge the shape of the breasts. Among popular cosmetic procedures, it ranks on the second number (after liposuction). Although there are many women who request to have a breast reduction procedure annually, the number requesting a breast augmentation in Atlanta is even higher.

Informally renowned as a “boob job” procedure, here is some information about the breast augmentation surgery to help you with your decision on whether or not you should opt for this procedure.

Saline vs. Silicone Gel Implants

When it comes to the breast augmentation procedure, two types of implants are common and currently, the American Society of Plastic Surgeons approves them for breast enhancement procedures. Keep in mind there is no “perfect” breast implant. You have to decide on your own and consult specialists such as Crispin Plastic Surgery to know what works best for your figure goals.

For a breast implant surgery, you must be at least 22 years of age, because, at this age, your breasts will fully develop.  The two common implants include:
Saline Implants

Saline implants feature silicone outer shells (rubber shells), which have saline (or sterile salt-water) filling inside. Some people consider these implants to be just water balloons because they feel like water balloons. The advantages of choosing this option as breast implants include:

  • First, the placement of this implant requires just a small incision and then inflate it with the saline solution

  • Second, in case of the implant ruptures, it is much easier for your plastic surgeon to deal with it rather than a gel implant.

However, like other things, even these come with some disadvantages, including:
  •  Saline breast implants feel less natural and the wrinkling of the implants becomes much more visible with saline, compared to gel implants.
Silicone Gel Implants

The other popular implant type is the silicone gel implant, which features silicone rubber outer shells with plastic gel fillings. The shell material and gel includes some variants of the exact chemical. The advantages of silicone gel implants include:
  • The most important advantage of this type of implant is that the gel implants feel much more natural compared to saline
  • There is a less chance of the gel implants wrinkling
  • They come in different customizable sizes

The disadvantages of silicone gel implants include:

When breast implants rupture, the gel can spread and the effects these causes are still debatable as compared to saline implant ruptures, which allows your body to absorb the salt water easily

It requires a longer incision as compared to saline breast implants.

Rest assured that both silicone and saline gel implants could have smooth and textured smooth surfaces. The implants could also be round or shaped, although most surgeons prefer the round implants. Silicone breast implants are also safe materials to use in different aspects of life and they last for a long time.

Under or Over the Pectoralis Muscle

In our body, the pectoralis muscle is a thick one found in the chest and the breasts grow over the pectoralis muscle. For a breast augmentation cosmetic procedure, with implants, the implants place either over the muscles or under by the plastic surgeon. However, for saline breast implants, it is possible to place it under this muscle, since placing it over can lead to more wrinkles of the breast implants, especially if it is a textured breast implant.

In addition, placing the implants under these muscles allows easy flow of blood to the nipples, since the nipples connect to the blood vessels that usually penetrate this muscle. It also allows a possible future breast revision, since the implant placement is on the front of the muscle.

However, one disadvantage of placing the implants under the muscle is the implants may be able to bulge high up in the chest, which gives the breasts an unnatural look. In addition, if the muscle contracts, it could cause the breasts to appear flat, which is something that will put you in a state of embarrassment. It can also have some effects on emotions.

To place the implant, your board-certified surgeon will place the implants in a pocket under or over the pectoralis muscle.

Possible Risks of the Boob Job Procedure
  • Just as it is with any surgery, there is often a risk of infection, especially if patients ignore proper care
  • Bleeding after the surgery
  • Formation of blood clots although many plastic surgeons will try to minimize this risk

Breast augmentation surgery is usually a safe and risk-free procedure, provided you seek the help of an experienced or board-certified plastic surgeon. Before you decide to go under the knife, it is advisable that you take your time to consult your surgeon, discuss all the possible risks and the pros and cons.
